Constructed sculpture emerged during the early 20th century as Picasso and other artists began to combine metals and other materials to express and synthesize ideas. No longer would solid marble or wax casting processes be enough to express the fragmented ideas of the modern age. To construe materials together became a metaphor for the complexities of a new society.

Construction

Combining pieces of the same material is a fundamental way to construct a sculpture. One might cut pieces of metal and then weld them together, or cardboard and tape them together, to create a unique form that can only be achieved through construction.
