As we experiment with media, we get a better sense of an artist’s challenges.

PURPOSE

To use our hands with 3D form and space

To consider length, width and height

To realize proportions

To understand the interaction between mass and space

Applying mass and space to understanding sculpture or architecture

THE EXERCISE
Experiment with SCALE and PROPORTION by creating a small 3D figure of an animal

INSTRUCTIONS

Use non-hardening modeling clay (or salt dough) to form small 3D animals.

Look at images of an animal from the front, sides, back and top.

Think about how thick or thin the body, head and limbs are.

Think about the spaces between the solid areas.

METHOD 1:  Begin by rolling the clay into cylinders, spheres or by forming cubes. Then modify and refine each part into proportions you feel are close to the real thing. You can use one color of clay, or you can combine and change colors.

Then, attach the parts to each other, and refine the whole sculpture while continuing to look at it from all angles. Keep looking, keep refining.

METHOD 2: Freely create by taking a large lump of clay in your hands. Push and pull until you have a semblance of a body, head and limbs. Refine the entire sculpture at the same time, continuing to look from all angles.

NOTice

Consider the difference between a real, live, breathing animal and a hunk of clay.

Think about the proportions between the head, body and limbs.

If you want to create some humor, change the proportions on purpose.

You can create more than one animal along with some leaves or ground or small objects to infer a small scene.

SALT DOUGH RECIPE

Homemade salt dough made of salt, flour and water can be used. Add food coloring if desired.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup salt

  • 1 cup water

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a large mixing bowl, stir together the flour and salt.

  2. Gradually add water while stirring and mixing to form a dough with a pliable consistency.

  3. Form the dough into a ball and knead for approximately 5 minutes, adding a bit more flour if the dough is too sticky or a bit more water if it’s too dry.

  4. Add food coloring if desired; separate into smaller amounts, then knead dough after adding one drop at a time. This can be messy, so wear gloves if desired.

THEMES
This exercise helps us think in 3 dimensions using scale, proportion and mass.
