PURPOSE
The PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN are:
UNITY, VARIETY, FOCUS, BALANCE, RHYTHM, SCALE, PROPORTION
To UNDERSTAND the principles of design through use of media
To EXPERIMENT with visual ways to demonstrate the principles
To EXPLORE the use of cut paper as a means for expression
THE EXERCISE
Illustrate the principles of design: UNITY, VARIETY, FOCUS, BALANCE, RHYTHM, SCALE, PROPORTION
INSTRUCTIONS
Use origami or brightly colored inkjet paper with glue, scissors and card stock
(This can be used as an insert in a CD cover)
Cut paper into shapes and paste onto a 4.5 x 4.5” piece of HEAVY PAPER OR CARDSTOCK.
METHOD 1: You can intentionally ‘illustrate’ a design principle and after you are done, consider whether you have fulfilled your intention.
METHOD 2: You can freely create without knowing what the result will be and after you are done, consider which design principle(s) are strongest in the work.
NOTice
You can allow yourself to illustrate a concept, a design principle.
What might look ‘unified’ or ‘varied’ or ‘rhythmic’ or ‘balanced’ or… ?
What configuration or pattern might illustrate UNITY, VARIETY, FOCUS, RHYTHM, BALANCE, SCALE or PROPORTION ?
You can overlap the pieces of paper, or fit them next to each other.
