where, exactly?
The feeling of a large space can be inspiring. When an artist begins to think about the scale, materials, temperature, vacancy or occupation of the space, he or she might generate ideas about how to create specifically for the area. A gray area might need a spot of color. A dry area may need a surprise. A blank area may need complexity. In this way, contrast of empty and full begin to create interactions of feeling, meaning or symbolism.
Site Specific
Although much sculpture may be designed to stand alone, apart from its surroundings, there are instances where a sculpture is designed specifically to enliven an area, or to transform how the area feels when one perceives or inhabits the space.
