relief

Relief printing involves cutting into or removing material from a surface such as wood or linoleum. Then ink is applied to the surface of the plate or matrix and pressure is applied to transfer the image.

  • There is a matrix or plate onto which an image is carved.

  • The surface of the matrix is inked with a roller or brayer.

  • The matrix is pressed against a piece of paper transferring the image to the paper.

  • The cuts or grooves DO NOT receive ink, the flat uncut surface does receive ink.

  • Images must be planned in reverse.

Types of relief printing include: WOODCUT, LINOCUT, and XYLOGRAFIA (Wood Engraving)
