relief
Relief printing involves cutting into or removing material from a surface such as wood or linoleum. Then ink is applied to the surface of the plate or matrix and pressure is applied to transfer the image.
There is a matrix or plate onto which an image is carved.
The surface of the matrix is inked with a roller or brayer.
The matrix is pressed against a piece of paper transferring the image to the paper.
The cuts or grooves DO NOT receive ink, the flat uncut surface does receive ink.
Images must be planned in reverse.
Types of relief printing include: WOODCUT, LINOCUT, and XYLOGRAFIA (Wood Engraving)
