all around

The term environment is often used to describe spaces that are large scale and outdoors, referring to that which surrounds us. When an artist thinks about an environment, he or she may ponder the ground, air, water, sky or temperature. In so doing, ideas spring up as to what might align with the feeling of the area, or what might challenge one to experience it differently. One might engage the wind, sound, water or changing effects of heat or cold in an environmental sculpture. Or one might dream about how transformations with the presence of items that would change human pathways and interactions within the space.

Environmental

An environmental sculptor thinks in not only 3 dimensions of length, width and height, but of the 4th dimension involving time and motion.

Because each person has a different vantage point in space when a sculpture is perceived, the meaning of time and movement become heightened.
